Hi everyone!
Another giveaway today, can you believe it? It’s almost like Christmas over here! :)
The kind people of Furls, you know, that company that makes those amazing wooden hooks, has kindly sent me one of their yarn bowls to review.
Now I have always wanted a yarn bowl, but somehow never got around to actually getting one. Most yarn bowls I really liked on Etsy were ceramic bowls, and as most of them had to cross half the globe to reach me, I didn’t want to risk getting a broken bowl once it got here. I even looked up some local ceramic artists to see if they made yarn bowls, but somehow it never went beyond that.
Enter wooden yarn bowls! :) Much easier to send because they’re a lot lighter and won’t break as easily!
This yarn bowl is made from Acacia wood and has been hand carved. Way cool. I ran my hand across the entire thing before I started using it, to make sure there were no rough edges my precious yarns could snag on, and there weren’t any!
Most people use yarn bowls to keep their yarn from rolling away when they’re working with it, and to protect it from dust, specks of fiber, and other things you don’t want ending up in your yarn.
I don’t know about you, but I rarely use a ball of yarn. Wait, let me rephrase. I rarely use balled up yarn ;) I usually cake my yarn, or pull from the center of a skein. When you use your yarn like that, there’s really no worrying about your yarn taking off and rolling around on the floor. So I was a little worried wether a yarn bowl would be put to good use in my house hold. Turns out; a yarn bowl is such a nice little place to put your yarn, that I use it with all my WIPs! Like this shawl I recently started; I caked the yarn but the yarn is still in the bowl, because it’s safe there! :)
So my conclusion? This yarn bowl is the bee’s knees! I use it all the time and I honestly wonder how I managed to work with yarn without a yarn bowl for such a long time ;) If there is one thing I would improve on this yarn bowl it is increase its weight. It’s a very light weight product, meaning that if you were to use it for a ball of yarn, it might move around as you pull the strand.
And now for the giveaway! Furls has kindly offered one of my readers (that’s you!) a chance to win a yarn bowl! :) Use the Rafflecopter widget below for your chance to win. (if you can’t see the widget, open this blog post on your tablet or pc, or visit this post from a browser rather than an RSS feed reader) This giveaway is open world wide, as usual! :)
Good luck everyone! I’ll draw a winner next week.
xo,
wink

Wonder if a yard bowl would work for thread?
August 26, 2014 at 4:13 pm
I thought this was stunning and started thinking about where I could get one when I saw your posting last week. I went to the yarn store and all they had was a plastic net yarn holder in hot pink. Not for me – but this beautiful wooden yarn holder would be perfect
August 26, 2014 at 4:13 pm
This is a beautiful bowl. My yarn is always rolling all over the place. Would love to have a designated area where it would be safe. Glad you like it so much.

Furls makes such beautiful things and it seems their yarn bowls are no exception. It’s wonderful to see the care and love and dedication they have for their art reflected in their products!

August 26, 2014 at 5:00 pm
Wow, this is the answer to all my problems (well at least the one concerning yarn)! I don’t cake my yarn but make balls of it. Which are rolling through the house when I am croceting. Or through the grass when I am sitting outside. I am always plucking leaves and grass from my yarn, so this yarnbowl would be very welcome.
August 26, 2014 at 5:00 pm
That is gorgeous – made by someone who is very talented indeed!

I’ve been eyeing this bad boy since I first saw it… Even considered getting a cheap bowl from Ikea and having a go at carving it myself, but I doubt it would be as good as the real deal :)
August 26, 2014 at 9:27 pm
I think the coolest one I’ve seen was where the artist (ceramic) cut out the person’s name, as the feed holes for the yarn. But I’m afraid of breakage, too. There used to be so many ceramic shops when I was a kid! Not so much, any more.
August 26, 2014 at 9:29 pm
Very nice :-D
August 26, 2014 at 9:48 pm

August 28, 2014 at 11:18 pm
A yarn bowl is just what I need to keep my balls of yarn from rolling off of the couch to all the way across the room, when I’m trying to crochet something. I like that it’s made out of wood. Sorta wish it had a lid, though, so no dust will get into my yarn when I’m taking a break from crocheting.
August 28, 2014 at 11:20 pm
Beautiful AND useful!
August 28, 2014 at 11:23 pm

August 29, 2014 at 2:14 am
It seems like a good idea. Other than the yarn rolling through the floor, my problem is usually also “unraveling” the ball as I work, as I have to keep pulling at it – I wonder whether the yarn bowl also helps with this. It certainly is a beautiful prop!

August 30, 2014 at 7:22 am
A couple of years ago I saw a picture of a wooden yarn bowl and showed the picture to my son. I commented on what a great idea it was because my yarn balls were always jumping off of the sofa as I was working. While it provided endless amusement for the cat, amusing the cat was not my goal. When I opened his gift to me on Christmas day, it was a beautiful wooden yarn bowl for my very own. He made it for me out of a large, olive wood salad bowl he and his sister found at World Market, I believe. He cut the curlyque thread guide, sanded and polished it smooth as can be and adhered a felt pad to the bottom of the bowl. What a delightful surprise! A wonderful gift from a wonderful son. I use it every day and love it. The cat…..not so much. Lol! I hope whoever receives this bowl you are giving away enjoys it as much as I enjoy mine. And for those who don’t win…….maybe you have a wonderful son, daughter, friend or husband who is crafty?

Everything Furls is beautiful, and this bowl is too! Wooden bowls are a perfect vessel for holding yarn because the action of the fibers brushing on the wood as the yarn ball unwinds polishes the wood even more. Not to forget the beautiful work of art at your side as you create a fiber masterpiece. Thanks fir the opportunity to win a lovely treat!
